When the world stops calling, when the rent comes due, there’s a room still glowing. Somewhere past the outskirts of the city stands The Projection, a cinema whose lights never seem to quite go out. Its director, the endlessly charismatic Mr Claude, has a habit of taking in the world’s outcasts, and promising them a stage, a family, and a role to play.
Page 3
The Projection is a story about who we become when the spotlight’s on us; about rivals who can’t stop circling each other and friends who’d follow you till the ends of the world and then some; and the quiet fear that our humanity alone might not be enough to remain ourselves. It’s also, we hope, a lot of fun! Expect jazzy dance battles, scene-stealing, a sidekick finally getting the attention she deserves, and all the more for our ensemble to sing and dance to their heart’s delight.

Thank you for being here. An audience is the most important piece of any cinema, and we couldn’t do it without you. Settle in, silence your phones, and leave any food at the door. Jermaine will be watching. Welcome home.

Creative Direction We had one message in mind when devising this play: to celebrate the humanity in art, and to lean into its whimsy, playful core, while confronting it with an uncomfortable veneer of what surrounds us. The music was inspired by a mix of 30s cabaret jazz and classical musical theatre songs, infusing large, spectacular numbers in the first act with a switch into more pop and classical, deeply emotional notes in the second act. Our costumes are a mix of handmade and thrifted.
Page 15
We adopted a minimalist approach for sets. Fabrics, curtains, and the iconic il burattino shape the stage, leaving performers ample space to frame their world. Publicity for The Projection was heavily inspired by spotlights, light, and photography. We chose to base the colours around the stage curtains, stretching the stage onto your screen.
